Among the finest known middle bronzes of Agrippina Junior
Lot 256
Agrippina Junior, Augusta, 50-59. Dupondius (Orichalcum, 32 mm, 18.34 g, 6 h), uncertain mint in Thrace, struck under Claudius, 50-54. AGRIPPINA•AVG•GERMANICI•F•CAESARIS•AVG• Draped bust of Agrippina Junior to left. Rev. Ceres, veiled, seated left on throne, holding two grain ears in her right hand and long transverse torch in her left. BMC -. CBN -. Cohen -. RIC -. RPC I online 1955. Von Kaenel, Thrakien, Type B, 8-9 and pl. 25, 32-33. Extremely rare and certainly one of the finest known examples. Somewhat smoothed, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Aes Augustorum Collection, formed since the late 1990s.

This is the only portrait of Agrippina Junior on a Roman imperial middle bronze, struck in the enigmatic eastern mint of Claudius and Nero, which von Kaenel suggested was located in Thrace to supply the legions on the Danube frontier. The issue must have been very small, for only a handful of Agrippina's dupondii have emerged over the years, most of which are heavily worn. Fortunately, this example, being one of the finest known, forms a notable exception.
